The Bear

The dream is haunting my sleep.  The third time now in two weeks:

As I stepped on the porch and the dog went into the backyard I heard a growling from behind the garden about 60 yards away.  It was a bear rocking back and forth on his front paws.  My concern was getting the 100 pound elderly dog back in the house.  I know the cats are in the house.  Not as much of a problem as they can both climb any of the abundant trees higher than the bear can.  The dog runs back in the house, I go down on the ground unable to run… I wake up.

The second dream is virtually the same, only the bear is by the graveyard only 30 yards from the house.  In each dream I scream for help.  Each time the dog makes it back to the front door and my legs turn to butter and I end up crawling just before I wake up.

The third dream the dog ran out the front door after a deer in the front yard.  I heard the growling near the pasture fence to my right less than 10 yards away.  I screamed for help and the dog ran back into the open door of the house, but again I was left outside the door, my weak legs collapsing and I was crawling to the door… again I woke up.

What is the meaning of the bear and why is he getting closer every dream? Why is my concern for others in the dream followed by my inability to help myself?

Grandma Lewis
I walked across the wooden front porch.  It spanned the front of the old two story house.  I had been invited in through the front door I went.  My eyes darted around the room full of beautiful antique furniture.  I started to recognize pieces.  A woman spoke to me.  Started to describe the history of the furniture and family.  It was Grandma Lewis.  I recognized her and explained to her who I was.  I hoped she would believe me and not think I was nuts.  I was 100 years back from my own time.  She believed me and even said she knew because of the family resemblence (reference to something during the day). Grandpa Lewis sat in an overstuffed chair with a pipe and a newspaper.  He smiled at me.  Grandma showed me beautiful furniture and an old small-size piano.  I actually touched the ivory keys and played a few notes admiring the carved wood.  I told grandma I still have the sewing table piece and the piano too, but corrected myself because I don't actually have the piano. (didn't know why I said that I did).  I asked Grandma where Nana was. (I said Nana out loud in my sleep).  I was so excited to see her.  I had to correct my question to Helen.  I know Nana was my name for Helen.  She said she wanted to show me the rest of the house first and to go through that door over there (pointing to my left at the back of the room).  I went through the door and Grandma said "I'll be right with you child".  The door closed.  Beyond it was a modern hallway, long and empty with many doors on both sides and all were closed.  White drywall, pecan colored doors, new carpet (modern from my day).  It was cold feeling, confusing.  I felt small and lonely.  There was a curved door at the end of the hall that I found architecturally interesting.  What era would I reach through that door?

The Doorway in the Hill
When we were casually looking for a new home, I had this recurring dream weekly for well over a year. It was so intense I actually drew a photo of the home and the area. Here is what I dreamed: We were driving up a hill when I saw an older farm house. As we pulled in the driveway I noticed a series of high tension towers in the field to the right of the house. We entered the house thru a cellar door in the basement. There was an old piano down there. Next I was climbing a large set of stairs, 6 steps up to a landing, turn and 6 steps up to the next floor. On the landing was a set of old heavy dingy drapes. Floor to ceiling two stories high. I grabbed the opening in the middle and threw the drapes open. It was a huge beautiful window looking out over a beautiful landscape. I gasp every time I saw this. I remember saying, “these drapes have to come down.” Suddenly we are in the yard, there is a door in the side of the hill. I’m puzzled and open the door to check it out. There is a set of stairs, it isn’t logical, but my son rushes ahead of me up the stairs. At the top he turns and proclaims, “This is my room!” Just then a presence swoops down the stairs in a cold mist and goes right thru my body. I close my eyes and smile, trying to hold on to this feeling, trying to identify the presence. Back to reality, we climb a long hilly driveway to an Open House. As we enter the home through a doorway into the lower level we must go up a stairway, 6 steps to a landing and 6 steps into the living area of the home. As I turn the corner in the living room there is the window 12’ long floor to ceiling overlooking a beautiful landscape. I gasp just like in my dream. We step outside and there, just as in the dream, is a doorway in the hill. We didn’t need to even discuss it, this was our house and we bought it. You ask about the farmhouse with the piano and the high tension wires that I drew a picture of, well that was next door.

Cold Dark
Cold Dark Water has always been the vision that would send chills thru my body. As long as I remember I?ve been afraid of it. It is in my nightmares when the day?s anxieties seem to be getting the better of me. It is a dark old house and you can hear the water dripping in the basement. It is always flooded down there, deep, cold and daring me to go down the stairs. The dripping sounds echo through a house that is otherwise still as a cave. Over and over I would stand at the top of the stairs and stare down into the damp darkness. I would awaken in a cold sweat with my heart pounding. On one occasion I went down the stairs. The basement was divided with wooden scaffolds crossing the water like catwalks. The dripping was deafening when suddenly the rhythm was broken by the distinct whimper of a child. The child was in the water, its mother standing on a plank that was bouncing with her cries for someone to help her child. ?Get over your fear,? I screamed to myself and jumped into the water. I lifted the child up to the outstretched arms of its mother, then pulled myself up onto the plank. I looked up and mother and child were gone, no sign of them. Gone also seemed to be the intense fear I had once felt. Gone also was that dream ? at least for now.

The Door at the End of the Hall
The door at the end of the hall opened into the late 1800's.  I was standing on a city sidewalk looking at an optomotrist sign above a shop door.  It resembled an oversize pair of spectacles and precisely that moment one of the supporting chains snapped and the spectacles swung down dangling on the remaining chain.  Now visible was an old round clock supported on a wall outside a clockmakers doorway.  The clock had no hands.  I pulled out my pocket watch and looked and it too had no hands.  Nor did the tower clock over the towne hall building.  Suddenly a horse drawn hearse came wildly up the street catching the rear wagon wheel on an old gas light pole.  The horse continued to pull until the wheel was torn from it's axle dumping the cart and spilling the contents of the casket it was carrying.  As I looked, the body in the casket was me.
